Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oghara chapter on Wednesday night embarked on industrial strike action over refusal by Delta State Government to pay Covid-19 inducement allowance to health workers in the State Teaching hospital.
The Chairman, MEWHUN, Delsuth chapter, Comr. James Ufuoma Isiosio confirmed the strike action, explaining that non-payment of Convid-19 inducement allowances to health workers, arbitrary removal of teaching allowance component from the salaries of health workers since 2016, under-staffing in most units and departments, lack of uniform allowance for uniform staff for over 5years were some of the union grievances.
He noted that after employing all avenue to resolve the union plights with Delta State Government yielded no result, the Union have no option than to embarked on the total industrial action to press home their demands.
Investigation revealed that health workers in the Delta State University Teaching Hospital suffer a lot of health hazards occasioned by tge dreaded Covid-19 without recourse to compensation by management and State government, a development that form part of MEWHUN agitating for better treatment cum compensation from Delta State Government.
Investigation also revealed that Delta State Head of Service, Mr. Reginald Bayoko who allegedly had been accused of responsible for under staffing of some units among other plights of the Union is said to be begging the Union to call off the strike with a promise to channel their plights to the appropriate quarters.
Efforts to reach the State commissioner for health, Mr. Ononye was abortive, but inside sources told our reporter that the Commissioner has invited MEWHUN leadership to a meeting in his office slated for tomorrow (Friday) at 10am.
