Navy Land compensation: Oghara communities Threatens to shut down East-West road again

Otumara and Okurho communities of Oghara in Ethiope west local government of Delta State has appealed to Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa to pay them their compensation for the land ceded to Nigerian Navy since 2009, just as they vowed to take on to the street to protest the alleged injustice melted on by Okowa led administration.

The communities promised to mobilize their women, youths and the aged to occupy the ever-busy East-West road to register the alleged injustice melted on them, vowed never to quit the road pending when the State government is ready to pay them their compensation.

According to the communities in a letter dated 6th August, 2018 sent to the governor and copy made available to our correspondent signed by Elder David Paul and Obalaye Williams among other signatories stated that they have written several letters to the governor to pay them their entitlements but yielded no result, hence the resolved to shut down the ever-busy East-West road to register their displeasure and tell the world the alleged non-challant attitude of the Delta State government towards the payment.
“We appeal to Gov. Okowa to use his good office to facilitate the payment of our compensation claims to us on or before 20th August, 2018”.

“If Delta State government fails to respond to our humble request by way of paying us our compensation claims, we will be constrained to publicly protest against this injustice by taking to the Ever-busy East-West road by way of barricade to demand for our compensation”.

The communities while lamenting their ordeal in the hands of the men of the Nigerian Navy each time they approach them for their compensation hinted that men of the Nigerian Navy always harass them, told them that it was the responsibility of the Delta State government to pay compensation for their crops not the navy.

According to the communities, sometime in 2016 after much protest, Delta State government came and enumeration exercise was done, noted that up till date nothing was done, while appealing to Delta State government to be alive to its responsibility by way of paying them their compensation claims. They added.
